We all love snacks but sometimes snacks just don’t love us.  Ok, they do love us but they seem to love us by settling on the tummy, hips, and thighs.  So what to do when you are looking for a healthier snack?    How about making a healthy trail mix?   We are sure you know how to make a trail mix but do you know what you would like to put in it?  We are here for suggestions for a delicious little blend that we believe you will enjoy without guilt.

This homemade trail mix is a satisfying snack that is healthy and is sure to control those cravings.  Instead of adding candy we are using dried cranberries and apricots as a sweet touch.     These dried fruits do contain sugar but as people say, all things in moderation.   But we will keep the ratio of nuts/seeds higher than the dried fruits to help keep the overall sugar numbers down.  Also, we are using unsalted nuts and seeds.

How to make Trail Mix:

This is about the simplest healthy trail mix recipe we know.

Start your trail mix by chopping up about 20 dried apricots to equal one cup.  Sometimes the apricots will be a little wet when chopped but separate them and lay them out while you are preparing the other ingredients.  And they will be added last in order to help separate them.

Measure out and add all the seeds and nuts to a medium-size bowl.   We love the fact that the choices are different sizes and colors, it makes a prettier mix.

Add those gorgeous Craisins to the seed and nut mix.  And mix well prior to adding the apricots.

Add the dried apricots to the mix and stir well.  The little seeds have a tendency to sink to the bottom so use a plastic scoop to reach to the bottom and gently turn and combine your homemade trail mix.

One of the most important points on making a healthy trail mix is portion control.   We all I believe are unaware of just how much we consume.  If I had a bowl of trail mix, I would be probable overindulge and really not realize it.  But if it was in prepackaged servings we take back that uncertainty.

It’s a great idea for you to measure out 1/4 cup servings of this homemade trail mix and place it in little snack bags.  We keep a basketful or jar right of these healthy trail mix baggies on the counter for quick, preportioned and healthy trail mix snacks.

I love a trail mix with almonds and dried cranberries. The pumpkin seeds sound really good. I like the idea of pre-measuring/packaging because I know I;d eat too much!

Thanks for the tip! I enjoy trail mix and I prefer to not eat chewy bars, which are not as "healthy" as they claim to be because they're full of chemicals and preservatives. Simpler is better.
