When summer rolls around, we look forward to enjoying a couple cold glasses of whiskey lemonade on the front porch in the evenings. This easy whiskey drink quenches your thirst and is a little nostalgic. Our front porch looks out over a green field of grazing cattle and the peaceful setting is the perfect place to unwind and sip on these simple whiskey cocktails.
The summers on a cattle ranch in Texas can be a little brutal, hot and dusty unless the rains come like we pray they do. But if we pray too hard then the rains come so fast that houses are floating down the Brazos River. Which is not what we wish nor pray for but most of the time, we don’t get enough rain so we continue to pray.

One way to survive the summer is to cool off from the heat is to sit in the shade and enjoy a glass of whiskey lemonade. And while we are sitting we talk about the good old days and about rain because that’s what Ranchers do. Anytime Ranchers get together the topic of rain comes up, every time, every single time! And especially if they have a cool easy whiskey drink.
And We talk about the days when the rains came just perfect. Ok just kidding, those days never happened. Those stories always get out of hand but at least its entertaining and our thirst is quenched.
And of course, the novel, The Time It Never Rained, by one of our favorite West Texas Authors, Elmer Kelton, also always comes up in conversation. He tells a story about the longest and most severe drought in West Texas memory and the challenges ranchers endured.
If you haven’t read or are not familiar with Elmer Kelton, you might remember the 1995 film, “The Good Old Boys” starring Tommie Lee Jones, Sissy Spacek, and Matt Damon. Elmer Kelton wrote that book turned movie and several other books about Ranching in West Texas. We were fortunate to meet him and we have several of his books autographed. Unfortunately, He passed away in 2009 but his stories are still very popular.
